Saudi Arabia first Contemporary Art Biennale unfolds in six sections examining themes including memory and preservation, cultural transmission, social engagement, the Anthropocene (the time during which humans have had a substantial impact on our planet) and the spiritual. Presented in the section ‘Going Public’, Manal AlDowayan's participatory installation, Tree of Guardians (2014) is based on workshops across Saudi Arabia inviting women to draw their family trees focusing on women's lineage. More than 300 drawings contribute to AlDowayan’s interest in ideas of disappearance and absence.
