Just Paper (2019) interrogates the textual manifestations of patriarchal power structures by taking aim at archival memory. Elaborately fashioned books aggregating religious injunctions for women—directive tomes used to control women’s lives—circulated widely and became household reference manuals. Upending the longevity of this printed, archival form, Al Dowayan renders the prescriptive texts in delicate porcelain, silk-screening them onto the fragile material, rendering them illegible. Rolled and replicated, forty-four scrolls entwined in a simple jute string cunningly enlist vulnerability as a challenge to authority.
