Here the landscape is minimal, serene, almost zen-like. Perhaps a nod to a Western Romantic landscape, or even Western scenes of disembarking on shores.

Here they implement this mood, this stance of disturbance. There is an estranging feeling: the scene is at once familiar and yet distant, odd. There is a kind of life and decomposition at the same time.

Once again, the Eastern influence in techniques work to undermine and reframe Western iconology. This technique is deeply inspired by the paintings of Ito Jakucho, a Japanese painter of the mid-18th century. Although he is most famous for painting animals, birds particularly, he did series of flower works in which we are drawn into the almost haptic life of the flower—how it decomposes, is devoured by insects. This part holds a decadence, a visceralness that contrasts with the barrenness of the land, although it fits with the oddly ceremonial scene at the left.
