ANOTHER LOVE_2001 is a continuation of the duo :mentalKLINIK’s series of works diverting pop culture and mass-produced iconic objects from their original use. The sockets, from which extend bulbs of varying sizes, textures and shapes, are double: two bulbs receive their energy from a single source. A nod to Felix Gonzalez Torres’ light bulb works, ANOTHER LOVE suggests a plurality of possibilities, celebrating not only non-conformism, but an ethos of three-become-one. The coloured light generates a ‘fall in love’ atmosphere, like some outdoor dance floor, or a cosy, homey corner. The bulb-socket clusters are nested in doodles of black wire, casting shadows against the wall, perceivable too as a three-dimensional drawing floating near the surface of the wall.
The artist duo, however, loves to play with paradox: rarely is one emotion evoked without a contrary feeling hovering on one dimension. For all its candy happy light, the works exudes loneliness—the aftermath of a festive gathering, fragile bulbs bobbing across a tangled sea of wire, a hastily installed decoration in a last-ditch attempt to enliven and uplift. Like the gnarled wires snaking across the wall, ANOTHER LOVE_ 2001 is a complex snare of thinking and feeling.
